THEA 2150 - Stage Rigging

4.5 Credits

The course builds on concepts and skills introduced in Theatre Technology I with specific emphasis on stage rigging. It covers rigging topics, including repair and maintenance, motorized rigging, trussing, and special applications, in the lecture portion and reinforces them during labs under non-production conditions. Students apply fundamental skills in the installation of flying scenery as well as use of stage rigging equipment under show conditions.

Course Objectives

1. Identify the safety practices necessary to work productively and safely in the area of stage rigging.

2. Safely install a variety of flying scenery in a number of different situations.

3. Apply techniques utilized in the theatre industry as they pertain to the construction, installation, and removal of scenic elements.

4. Identify the parts of a stage counterweight system and inspect them for damage.

5. Repair or replace damaged or worn parts of a normal stage counterweight system.

6. Operate motorized rigging and trussing used in the theatre industry.

7. Explain the forces and loads on stage rigging components and the structure supporting them.
