SCIE 1400 - Introduction to Meteorology


6.0 Credits

Students explore the dynamic nature of weather phenomena that impact our daily activities, travel, and industry. The course covers atmospheric structure, clouds, precipitation, fronts, wind, storms, climate, and pollution. Special topics may include issues ranging from aviation accidents and global warming to alternate energy sources. This course includes both lecture and lab components.

Course Objectives
  1. Identify and explain the basic structure and defining features of layers found in the earth’s atmosphere.
  2. Describe the processes by which energy is distributed and transferred into, from, and within the atmosphere.
  3. Describe forms of precipitation and their origins.
  4. Assess current weather conditions, including cloud types, by direct observation.
  5. Identify key features and causes associated with the development of various storm types.
  6. Explain phenomena described on weather charts.
  7. Identify hazards associated with various weather phenomena.
  8. Differentiate between meteorology and climate concepts.
  9. Explain theories of anthropogenic input to climate change.
  10. Describe optical phenomena and their causes.
