SCIE 1300 - Astronomy

Students are introduced to the tools of astronomy, the night sky, the solar system, stars and star systems, galaxies, and cosmology. This is a lecture-only course. The lab course that complements this course is SCIE 1310.

Course Objectives

Understand and contemplate the earth’s position in the universe.
Beware of and explain the contributions of early and contemporary astronomers to the science.
Understand the physics of light, the spectrum and their application to telescopes.
Describe the motions of the planets and the organization of the solar system.
Understand deep space phenomena and the nature of the universe.
Understand the life cycles of stars as well as our nearest star, the sun.
