SCET 2250 - Advanced Surveying 5.5 Credits
Students learn land surveying theory and practices using a theodolite, total station and GPS unit. Topics studied are survey traverse and determination of azimuths and bearings, as well as coordinate geometry and curve computations. Students also learn topographic mapping, construction staking, and GPS basics, concepts and applications.
Prerequisites: (2) SCET 1220 and MATH1240 OR MATH1430

Course Objectives 1. Compute and perform obstruction avoidance in traverses and close traverse work.
2. Develop the ability to convert angles to and from directions and basic coordinate geometry computations.
3. Describe and perform complex area computations.
4. Develop working with curved lines.
5. Identify the methods of calculating cut and fill for road construction.
6. Calculate vertical and horizontal curves.
7. Develop the steps necessary to make a triangulation survey of a rectangular parcel of land.
8. Apply the process of setting slope stakes for road construction.
9. Apply the use of computer graphs to map roadway plans and to plot cross sections.
10. Develop the ability to survey using Global Positioning Systems
