MDST 2120 - Pharmacology for Medical Assistants and Allied Health Professionals II 4.5 Credits
This course provides students with the opportunity to apply different drug regimens, list the effects of medications on all of the body systems, state special considerations for age-specific medication administration, and identify drugs used to treat various disease processes. Students must also be able to identify and understand, at a minimum, the top 50 common medications used in the clinical and outpatient setting and how they relate to the human body and disease.
Prerequisites: (3) MDST 1010, MDST 1050, and MDST 2020

Course Objectives 1. Explain the use of antibiotic treatments, understand the classifications of antibiotics and explain side effects and adverse reactions
2. Understand and discuss how antibiotics affect the older adult and the child..
3. Understand and explain the use of Antiviral, Antifungal, and Immunizing medications
4. Understand the essentials of medication administration.
5. Understand and demonstrate the administration of non-parenteral medications. Understand and demonstrate the administration of parenteral medications, equipment and supplies.
6. Understand and explain the use of Antineoplastic Agents and Cancer Treatments
7. Apply critical-thinking and problem-solving skills as it applies to Pharmacology and the clinical, and outpatient care essential to provide quality patient care.
8. Understand and explain the use and importance of vitamins and minerals, and proper nutrition
9. Understand and explain the importance of reducing stress
10. Understand and explain depression in children, adults and older adults, recognize suicide warnings
11. Understand and explain the classifications of antidepressant, antipsychotic, and Antimanic drugs, and substance abuse
12. Understand and explain medications used for musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, circulatory, respiratory, urinary, endocrine, nervous, and reproductive systems
