MDST 1010 - Clinical Procedures I

This course provides theoretical and clinical applications to instruct students on patient care procedures performed in the physician’s office. These procedures include, but are not limited to, administering medication, taking vital signs, collecting and processing specimens, performing EKGs, preparing patients for examinations, procedures and treatments, and assisting with minor surgical procedures. This is an entry-level course.

Prerequisites: (3) MDST 1020 and MDST 1030 and MDST 1040

Course Objectives
1. Apply principles of aseptic technique and infection control
2. Comply with quality assurance practices
3. Adhere to established triage procedures
4. Obtain patient history and vital signs
5. Prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas
6. Prepare patient for examinations, procedures, and treatments
7. Assist with minor surgical procedures/ identify surgical instruments used in clinic
8. Under sterile technique and apply principles
9. Prepare/wrap surgical instruments to sterilization process
10. Operate an autoclave properly/understand safety precautions
11. Prepare and administer medications and immunizations
12. Maintain medication and immunization records
