LAWS 2240 - Legal Research and Writing II

As this course builds on competencies learned in Legal Research and Writing I, students will locate, read, analyze, and apply the law to case scenarios using organized research and analytical writing methods used by legal professionals. Emphasis is placed on ethics and professionalism in research and writing, including adherence to deadlines.

Course Objectives

Locate, analyze, and apply primary legal authority to hypothetical fact situations.
Use the IRAC method of legal writing to present completed research and analysis.
Demonstrate good writing mechanics in all written work.
Use plain language, not legalese, to express analysis clearly and concisely.
Read, understand, and brief a court opinion.
Prepare a memorandum based on a hypothetical fact scenario.
Draft routine correspondence that is used in a legal environment.
Proofread and revise documents for correctness, clarity, completeness, and conciseness.
Examine ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in legal research and writing.
Explain ethics and professionalism required in legal research and writing.
