LAWS 1111 - Law Office Technology

As introduction to software applications specific to law offices, students learn the basics to format legal documents, to complete electronic filing and eDiscovery, and to use software for timekeeping and billing, databases, litigation support, and case management. Students also address legal, ethical and security considerations in the use of computer technology.

Course Objectives
1.    Draft and manage professional correspondence through Outlook email software program.  
2.    Demonstrate ability to perform common tasks for electronic communication through use of Microsoft Outlook, including importance of email security and calendar management. 
3.    Coordinate Calendar meetings and events with multiple attendees.  
4.    Create and edit word processing documents unique to the legal environment, including use of templates, macros, creation of table of contents and table of authorities. 
5.    Demonstrate ability to perform basic tasks, including creating commonly used legal documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. 
6.    Describe proper method and procedures involved in document collaboration while following security and encryption protocols.  
7.    Create and edit spreadsheets unique to the legal environment using multiple data types and Excel functions.  
8.    Demonstrate ability to perform common tasks for opening a new client matter in Clio billing/case management software program. 
9.    Demonstrate ability to perform common tasks for tracking case exhibits and details through use of CaseMap, and TimeMap. 
10. Explain the basics of E-discovery, including basic terminology and how to perform common tasks using E-discovery software program Concordance. 
11. Demonstrate use of electronic discovery software and procedures. 
12. Explain the basics of trial presentation software Sanction, and TrialDirector, and how each can be used at trial.  
13. Discuss various ethical considerations involving the use of technology in a law office.
