LANG 1130 - Emphasis Seminar


4.5 Credits

Good for the experienced and new interpreter alike, this course gives students a taste of work in each area of interpreting emphasis: community, legal, and medical. Students practice consecutive and simultaneous interpretation and sight translation with typical texts and oral exchanges from each area of emphasis and discuss the benefits of working in each area.

Prerequisites: (2) Fluency in both English and another language

Course Objectives
  1. Explain the day-to-day work of interpreters in three fields.
  2. Interpret and sight translate field-specific material.
  3. Identify steps toward certification in each field.
  4. Devise techniques to deal with work-related stress.
  5. Improve vocabulary in working languages through reading and glossary development.
