INFO 2810 - Security Capstone


4.5 Credits

This course offers practical, hands-on experiences within scenario-based environments. Students will integrate and apply concepts and tools acquired in prior courses. The curriculum involves conducting risk analyses and threat assessments, culminating in the development of comprehensive security plans. Key components include auditing, monitoring, incident response, forensics, and penetration testing.

Note: This capstone course, specifically designed for degree or career certificate seeking students in the Cybersecurity program at MCC, should be taken as the final program course. It synthesizes the concepts, processes, and practical experiences acquired throughout the preceding security courses. Additionally, current work experience may be evaluated to fulfill course requirements.

Course Objectives
  1. Demonstrate the security policy process and the appropriate methods used to assess network threats, evaluate risk, and complete an appropriate response process in the form of a finalized plan.
  2. Define and demonstrate the appropriate methodology using various network penetration tools for evaluating threats, testing implementations, and conducting audits and demonstrate their use in the final security plan.
  3. Demonstrate the role of servers in a network, the risks present in homogeneous and heterogeneous networks, and methods employed to protect or harden them.
  4. Explain the role of the workstation in the network and the methods necessary to protect or harden it.
  5. Examine the ramifications of boundary protection using different types of firewalls and packet filtering and demonstrate the appropriate selection based on risk analysis.
  6. Discuss the role of the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and the various methods of authentication needed to mitigate vulnerability and risk.
  7. Demonstrate how to process an incident and use the appropriate reporting level for that incident.
