INFO 1023 - Networking Essentials I 4.5 Credits
Students will learn networking basics, including data transmission, OSI and TCP/IP models, IP addressing, protocols, and network topologies. This course covers both physical and cloud-based environments, equipping students with a foundational understanding of core networking concepts essential for advanced studies in network implementation. This course aligns with key objectives and may help students prepare for the CompTIA Network+ certification exam.
Note: Students must receive a C or better in this course to enroll in INFO 2023 or a capstone course.
Prerequisites: (2) INFO 1110 and INFO 1105

Course Objectives
- Describe networking fundamentals
- Effectively describe OSI and TCP/IP models, including each layer’s role in data transmission.
- Analyze transmission media types and assess their suitability for various networking environments, differentiating between copper, fiber, and wireless transmission.
- Evaluate network topologies and architectures, selecting appropriate designs for given scenarios and identifying traffic flow implications in modern networks.
- Identify and compare network devices and appliances, explaining their functions and use cases within wired and wireless networks.
- Identify and classify networking protocols and services based on standard ports and functions, and discuss how traffic types (unicast, multicast, broadcast) impact network communication.
- Implement IP addressing and subnetting techniques for IPv4 and IPv6, demonstrating the ability to apply subnetting skills in network scenarios.
- Implement IP Routing techniques within a SOHO Environment.
