HIMS 2980 - Medical Office Applications


4.5 Credits

This capstone course provides the opportunity to develop medical office application skills through individual and collaborative learning experiences.  This course integrates all of the competencies obtained throughout the program, as well as provides lab activities in the navigation of an electronic health record, and the importance of accuracy as related to continuity of care and reimbursement.

Course Objectives
  1. Describe the importance of professionalism, career development, and employability skills required for a career in health care.
  2. Discuss the various types of communications within a healthcare setting, and the importance of breaking down any barriers to maintain open communication and positive patient outcomes.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of HIPAA guidelines and the importance of maintaining confidentiality, ensuring security risks are addressed.
  4. Discuss Plan-Do-Check-Act, SWOT analysis, and the necessity of short- and long-range planning, as well as strategic planning in a healthcare environment.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding in the navigation of electronic health records to ensure accuracy as related to continuity of care and reimbursement.
  6. Describe the importance of governmental guidelines as it pertains to risk management, quality improvement, and meaningful use.
  7. Prepare professional and accurate medical-related correspondence in electronic and mailable format.
  8. Use critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential to career success in the health care field.
