HDIM 2983 - HDIM Practicum

2.0 Credits

Students apply knowledge learned in the Health Data and Information Management Program to various health information management (HIM) functions at healthcare organizations under the guidance of HIM professionals. This course is for students near completion of the associate degree program in HDIM. Based on state requirements, students must complete 40 hours of work for each credit hour.

Course Objectives

Practice professionalism by presenting a professional appearance and conducting oneself in a professional manner.
Apply theory, knowledge and skills in the performance of health information procedures.
Demonstrate professional and ethical conduct by preserving the confidentiality of patient, professional, and facility information and by following all ethical principles of the AHIMA Code of Ethics.
Demonstrate the ability to work with other professional and non-professional personnel in the HIM department and related departments.
Express effective interpersonal and team skills by participating and contributing toward group activities when required, showing respect, and relating well to others.
Exhibit resourcefulness, showing initiative in evaluating all resources available, asking for assistance only after searching for resources themself.
Identify need for clarification, additional information, further instruction or assistance.
Exhibit time management and goal oriented skills in setting priorities to accomplish activity requirements in an effective and timely manner.
