Students gain knowledge of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)/ Health Care Procedural Coding System (HCPCS), official coding guidelines, and assignment of codes to various clinical statements, scenarios, reports, and patient records. Students explore utilization of coding resources and tools.

Course Objectives

Identify the importance of coding and state basic coding concepts.
Explain the format of the CPT system.
List the major sections found in the CPT manual.
Locate terms in the CPT manual index.
Identify information in appendices of the CPT manual.
Determine CPT codes for, including but not limited to, medical specialties, surgery, hospital outpatient reporting, and pathology and laboratory procedures using coding guidelines.
List the components of evaluation and management and determine the level of evaluation and management service.
Apply modifiers to the CPT codes when appropriate.
Describe HCPCS coding system and assign codes using the index in the tabular section of the HCPCS coding reference.
Recognize the symbols, abbreviations, and acronyms used by healthcare providers.
