FIST 2000 - Incident Command System

3.0 Credits

Students will be introduced to the basic principles of the Incident Command System within the National Incident Management System (NIMS) compliant framework. The course covers the Department of Homeland Security Incident Command courses 100, 200, and 700. These are the minimum Federal ICS requirements for first responders within the United States. In addition to the course reading material and lecture, the course relies heavily on a final group activity and an understanding of inter-agency dynamics. Personnel accountability, safety at the scene, planning for the continuity of operations, and logistical requirements for incidents of all risks and sizes are only a few of the major components that are covered.

Course Objectives

Organize emergency personnel into a modular organization on scene in an orderly fashion that will facilitate: Personnel safety and accountability, operational continuity, planning for the future resource needs of the incident, and any logistical needs that may be required by first responders.
Understanding of the federal requirements for national uniformity in the Incident Management capacity, and what the roles are of the Incident Command and General staff. This will include what position responsibilites are below the General Staff Section Chiefs at an incident.
Recognize current abilities and appropriately place themselves within the Incident Command Structure and respond accordingly during a simulated emergency incident in the form of a table top exercise.
Complete and pass the DHS required tests for all three ICS modules to be given a passing grade for the course.
