FIST 1030 - Hazardous Materials Chemistry


3.0 Credits

This course provides basic chemistry related to the categories of hazardous materials.  This includes the problems of recognition, the reactivity issues, and health concerns encountered by firefighters. The curriculum focuses heavily on the identification and chemical composition of hazardous materials as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This course is written to the National Fire Academy (NFA) FESHE curriculum. This course prepares students for the Hazardous Materials Technician Certification issued by the state Fire Marshall.

Course Objectives
  1. Identify hazardous materials in every day environments.
  2. Explain and educate others on the behavior and toxicity of chemical compounds.
  3. Explain the ways in which elements compounds are formed and how they interact together.
  4. Identify and categorize types and characteristics of chemical reactions.
  5. Recognize the elements involved daily surrounding.
  6. Differentiate the flammability, storage, and responses to flammable liquids and gases.
  7. Differentiate the flammability, storage, and responses to hazardous organic compounds.
  8. Differentiate the flammability, storage, and responses to corrosive materials
  9. Differentiate the flammability, storage, and responses water-reactive materials.
  10. Identify and define the Hazard Classes and Their Divisions within Emergency Response Guidebook.
  11. Identify and define the hazardous materials in fixed facilities within Emergency Response Guidebook.
  12. Identify and define the Response Guidelines within Emergency Response Guidebook.
