FINA 2320 - Retirement Planning and Employee Benefits 4.5 Credits
Students engage in the study of pertinent issues faced by those preparing for retirement. Such issues include income planning, Social Security, Medicare, long-term care insurance, distributions from retirement plans, housing and residence concerns, guardianships, conservatorships, durable powers of attorney, and living trusts. The course reviews employee benefits as they relate to the retirement planning process.

Course Objectives (CFP Board Approved Course Objectives)
- Analyze the importance of retirement planning for the pre-retirement accumulation period and the actual retirement when the funds are used.
- Explain the important provisions of Social Security and Medicare coverage.
- Distinguish between qualified and nonqualified retirement plans and determine the basic characteristics (tax implications, plan contributions, benefits, distributions, etc.) of various retirement plans.
- Compare personal savings plans used in the retirement planning process.
- Determine the legal and tax requirements for a retirement plan to be considered qualified for income tax purposes.
- Identify the regulatory considerations of qualified plans. Explain the key factors affecting plan selection.
- Recognize the various employee benefits offered to employees by their employers and determine basic characteristics (tax implications, employee benefit analysis and application).
