ESLX 0731 - Reading and Vocabulary 1


4.5 Credits

In this course, students read a variety of texts to begin developing the foundational reading skills necessary for success at the college level. Students learn to paraphrase ideas and summarize short texts. Students also expand their academic vocabulary and knowledge of prefixes and suffixes through learning to use a monolingual English dictionary.

Prerequisites: (1) MCC Assessment Testing

Course Objectives
  1. Identify author’s purpose, topic, main idea, and supporting details of authentic, level-appropriate texts.
  2. Use newly acquired academic vocabulary orally and in writing.
  3. Use a monolingual dictionary to identify parts of speech and multiple meanings of relevant vocabulary.
  4. Paraphrase specific information in authentic, level-appropriate texts without plagiarizing.
  5. Write accurate summaries of short texts without plagiarizing.
