ENGL 2620 - British Literature II

Students explore British literature from the late 18th century to the present and study the ways in which Britain developed its literary identity over the course of this period. The literature written during this period brings to life the social, cultural, and political climate of the time. By critically reading, discussing, and responding in writing to a variety of British texts written since 1785, students explore themes such as the conflict between nature and industrialization, progress, faith, freedom, and identity.

Course Objectives

Analyze rhetorical elements in works of British Literature written after 1785.
Contextualize authors and works of British Literature written after 1785 personally, socially, culturally, philosophically, and historically.
Identify and examine multiple perspectives in, among, and as applied to works of British Literature written after 1785.
Discover universal themes in works of British Literature written after 1785.
Explore and articulate their own perspectives on universal themes in works of British Literature written after 1785.
Demonstrate an appreciation of works of British Literature written after 1785 and their influence on American, and world, literature through discussion, writing, and independent engagement with literary art.
