ENGL 2610 - British Literature I

Students explore literature from the 7th to the 18th centuries and study the ways in which Britain developed its literary identity over the course of this period. The literature written during this period brings to life the religious, social, and political climate of the time. By critically reading, discussing, and responding in writing to a variety of early British texts, students explore themes such as origins, faith, freedom, and identity.

Prerequisites: ENGL 1010 or ENGL 1011 or ENGL 1220 or ENGL 1225 or ENGL 1230

Course Objectives

Analyze rhetorical elements in works of early British Literature.
Contextualize authors and works of early British Literature personally, socially, culturally, philosophically, and historically.
Identify and examine multiple perspectives in, among, and as applied to works of early British Literature.
Discover universal themes in works of early British Literature.
Explore and articulate their own perspectives on universal themes in works of early British Literature.
Demonstrate an appreciation of works of early British Literature and their influence on American, and world, literature through discussion, writing, and independent engagement with literary art.
