The United States has experienced radical changes since 1865. The literature written during this period brings to life the social, cultural, artistic, and political climate of the time. By critically reading, discussing, and responding in writing to a variety of American texts written since 1865, students explore themes such as the conflict between the urban and rural, migration, industrialization, progress, globalization, language, freedom, and identity.

Prerequisites: ENGL 1010 or ENGL 1011 or ENGL 1220 or ENGL 1225 or ENGL 1230

Analyze rhetorical elements in works of American Literature written since 1865.
Contextualize authors and works of American Literature written since 1865 personally, socially, culturally, philosophically, and historically.
Identify and examine multiple perspectives in, among, and as applied to works of American Literature written since 1865.
Discover universal themes in works of American Literature written since 1865.
Explore and articulate their own perspectives on universal themes in works of American Literature written since 1865.
