ENGL 2450 - Introduction to Literature

Students explore the genres, elements, and themes of literature by critically reading, discussing, and responding in writing to a culturally diverse selection of works. Fiction, poetry, and drama are emphasized. Students learn to appreciate literature as essential to understanding self and society.

Course Objectives

Analyze rhetorical elements in works of literature.
Contextualize works of literature biographically, socially, culturally, philosophically, and historically.
Identify and examine multiple perspectives in and among works of literature.
Discover universal themes in works of literature.
Explore and articulate their own perspectives on universal themes in works of literature.
Demonstrate an appreciation of literature through discussion, writing, and independent engagement with literary art.
