This course examines the role of the police in relationship to the duties of law enforcement and their policing in a diverse society. Specific topics include key demographic trends related to the growth of multicultural communities. Also covered are key issues associated with immigration and how those issues affect law enforcement officials in their everyday job.

Course Objectives

Identify the challenges of policing in a free society
Understanding the foundations of policing from England to modern day policing in America
Describe the difference between criminal and civil laws
Understanding evolving strategies of policing
Discuss managing critical incidents involving media relations and strategic communications
Evaluate recruitment methods targeting females and minorities
Describe the advances in physical evidence in AFIS and DNA
Define community-based approaches involving broken windows policing procedures
Discuss socialization vs. predisposition of police behavior in policing
Evaluate the use of deadly force situations
Discuss the integration of minorities, women and members of the LBGT officers into law enforcement
Understand the limits of professional and ethical standards
Describe the consequences of police stress and its impact on families
Discuss the development of higher education programs for police
Evaluate the connection between multicultural law enforcement and terrorism, and homeland security
