CRIM 2020 - Legal Issues in Corrections

Criminal justice students are introduced to an overview of the critical issues of correction: to include the key correctional issues of changing goals within corrections, working with a diverse group of correctional offenders, and reentry concepts. Students also learn about the legal controversies of managing sex offenders, mental health offenders, and the elderly.

Course Objectives

Examine the correctional history, including the changing goals of corrections.
Understand the management of correctional institutions, including legal issues involving mentally disordered offenders.
Have a clear understanding of prisoner reentry and the impact of sparse community correctional programs.
Identify and describe faith-based programs, dealing with mentally ill populations, and gender responsive populations.
Explain the key issues in capital punishment.
