CRIM 1140 - Reporting Techniques for Criminal Justice

This is an interactive course where students will document all aspects of the criminal justice system, from arrival at the scene of an incident to the presentation of the written report in court. Students and will be provided the tools, resources, and practical exercises to master the skill of professional criminal justice report writing.

Course Objectives

Describe the philosophy of criminal justice writing.
Explain the basics of investigation, the goal of an investigation, and what steps to take in initiating an investigation.
Prepare note taking, field notetaking and the desired outcome of note taking opportunity.
Provide overall framework for writing good investigative narrative.
Define key writers in criminal justice reports, including reporting party, victims, and witnesses.
Explain the purpose of police reports, correctional facility reports, and probation/parole reports.
