AUTT 1110 - Automotive I: Fundamentals

12.0 Credits

Students learn many of the basic elements of the auto repair trade including safety, chemicals, basic tool use, tire repair, oil change, TPMS systems, and introduction to electrical repair. Soft skills, such as attitude, ethics, professionalism, and on-the-job communication are encouraged. Students practice entry level skills by working in teams, using online resources, participating in class, and individualized hands-on lab training utilizing program vehicles. Before moving on to the next skill set, students must be proficient in the previous tasks. At the end of this course, students will demonstrate an individual mastery of designated skills using modern industry standard equipment.

Recommended: For those with limited computer skills INFO 1001 is recommended.

Course Objectives

Obtain safety certifications in Automotive Service Safety and Automotive Service Pollution and Prevention.
Locate and find vehicle identification using ShopKeys and AllData.
Perform an oil change and vehicle inspection within 24 minutes following a standardized process.
Perform a tire dismount, mount, and balance within 20 minutes.
Explain and apply the basic principles of electricity to automotive circuits.
Identify parts of a circuit in an automotive electrical diagram and diagnose common electrical problems using wiring diagrams.
Describe the different kinds of automotive wiring and apply Ohm’s law.
Diagnose vehicle starting and charging systems using industry-standard equipment.
