SOCI 2150 - Survey of Human Sexuality

This course is a survey of the topic of human sexuality. It presents materials concerning the biological, psychological, and socio-cultural facets of sexual behavior. (Cross-listed as PSYC 2150 )

Course Objectives
  1. Describe the evolutionary, cultural, historical, and religious influences on sexuality and reproduction.
  2. Compare and contrast the various perspectives used to understand and explain human sexuality including the biological, evolutionary, psychoanalytic, behavioral, and sociological approaches.
  3. Delineate the research methods used to study and understand human sexuality and identify the contributions of groundbreaking researchers in the field.
  4. Describe the anatomy and physiology of sex, including the neurochemistry of arousal, love, and attraction.
  5. Explain various health issues as they relate to reproduction, sexual dysfunction, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and safer sex practices.
  6. Distinguish between sex, sexuality, and gender; and discuss the interactive biopsychosocial factors that influence these.
  7. Describe unique biological and social aspects of development that are associated with each stage of life (i.e., childhood through adulthood).
  8. Review the types and variations of human sexual behaviors.
  9. Discuss current social and legal issues surrounding sex including sexual harassment, assault and abuse, and sex for profit.
  10. Utilize APA-style format in writing assignments.
