DIMA 1320 - History of Graphic Design


4.5 Credits

Students are introduced to the major developments and advancements in graphic design from the mid-15th century to the 21st century. This course enables the graphic design student to recognize and analyze the advancement of graphic design history in order to assess its impact on the industry today. The student accomplishes this by learning about graphic design history set in a historical, socio-political context. The student learns formal analysis of graphic design theories and elements, as well as, the contextual relevance.

Course Objectives
  1. Recognize the development of graphic design and use of mass communication throughout history.
  2. Identify major figures, styles, movements, symbols and theories in graphic design.
  3. Identify the formal elements of major figures, styles, movements and symbols.
  4. Analyze graphic design styles, movements and theories inside and outside the social, historical and cultural context in which they were created.
  5. Compare and contrast figures, styles, symbols, movements and theories in graphic design.
  6. Evaluate graphic symbols, styles, theories and movements in graphic design.
  7. Apply graphic design theories and principals from graphic design history to current design.
  8. Identify the legacy of graphic design history on modern design and mass communication.
  9. Assimilate and synthesize scope of graphic design history into future design projects.
