ARCH 1400 - Building Materials


4.5 Credits

Students learn about building materials and their relevant properties. Students examine how materials are used for structural, thermal, and finish systems in buildings as well as how they are represented in construction documents including drawings and specifications.

Pre/Corequisite: (1) ARCH 1005 must be completed prior to or at the same time as this course, or Instructor Approval.

Course Objectives
  1. Interpret the relevant physical properties of materials used in buildings.
  2. Analyze the factors which affect material selection for the structural, thermal, and finish systems of buildings.
  3. Relate materials to each other in the context of a building in a drawing.
  4. Evaluate the environmental and health impacts of building materials throughout their lifecycle.
  5. Analyze how materials are represented in specifications and construction drawings.
