COMS 1110 - Public Speaking


4.5 Credits

Students learn basic theory and practice speaking effectively in public.  Topics include topic selection, audience analysis, speech preparation and organization, support of speeches with credible research, strategic and creative language use, effective listening and delivery skills, and common types of public speeches.  

Recommended: ENGL 1010 - recommended prior to taking the course, but not required.

Course Objectives
  1. Explore the Foundations of Public Speaking, including the basic elements of the communication process, the various models of communication, the history of public speaking, and the relationship between public speaking and personal success.
  2. Adapt to the problems and responsibilities of beginning speakers.
  3.  Employ effective listening skills.
  4. Prepare a public speech.
  5. Organize a public speech.
  6. Choose appropriate language and use appropriate techniques in public speaking situations.
  7. Present a public speech.
  8. Identify distinguishing characteristics between informative, persuasive, and commemorative speeches.
