Developing a good understanding of the process of life requires students to have a broad background in the basics of biology. Students will gain this background by studying ecology, molecular biology, cell structure and function, genetics, and evolution. This course includes both lecture and lab components

Course Objectives 1. Identify and explain the function of major cell structures including those involved in cell reproduction.
2. Explain how molecules are involved in or control cellular processes.
3. Explain the genetic basis for inheritance in living organisms.
4. Predict how contemporary application of biotechnology impacts society.
5. Explain how organic evolution and natural selection resulted in the diversity of organisms.
6. Explain how biotic and abiotic factors determine the distribution and abundance of organisms.
7. Practice using the scientific method.
8. Demonstrate efficient and effective use of the light microscope.
