ARTS 1020 - 2-D Design


4.5 Credits

The course 2-D Design is a foundational course that focuses on the elements and principles of design in order to prepare students for advanced study in the visual arts. Students are introduced to 2-D concepts and progress to more complicated problems involving color theory and various media. Emphasis is also placed on visual communication, idea building, and critical analysis in the context of historic and contemporary art and design.

Course Objectives
1.    Implement various compositional strategies to solve design problems.

2.    Develop multiple solutions to design problems in either sketchbook or digital format.

3.    Incorporate the Elements and Principles of Design into specific projects.

4.    Explore color Theory and Color Mixing through hands on experimentation with color media.

5.    Use a variety of color media to include paint. (Digital and Mixed Media techniques are encouraged but optional.)

6.    Analyze, discuss, judge and interpret various two dimensional works of art.

7.    Build a vocabulary of art, design and visual communication terminology.

8.    Research and discover examples of classic design solutions from the History of Modern and Contemporary Art and Design.

9.    Begin to exhibit a professional level of craftsmanship and presentation practices.
