ARTS 1000 - Introduction to the Visual Arts

Students gain a broad understanding of the visual arts and develop visual literacy proficiency. Students will explore why and how artists create and will have an opportunity to observe the creative process. Fine art media, techniques, formal composition, and thematic topics are addressed. Students also consider continuity and change in art over time and the relationship between the arts and society.

Course Objectives
  1. Identify the elements of art and the principles of the visual arts.
  2. Describe characteristics of various periods in the visual arts.
  3. Identify and distinguish individual styles of art.
  4. Historically and culturally contextualize a variety of specific works of art.
  5. Write a formal analysis of a work of art
  6. Identify and distinguish a variety of aesthetic approaches to the visual arts as well as the characteristics of various mediums and techniques.
