DESL 1000 - Introduction to Diesel Technology


4 Credits

Students develop a basic understanding of the diesel technology including preventive maintenance, shop processes, tool usage, safety, and career opportunities.  Students also identify and explain basic functions of components including the engine, driveline, HVAC system, and accessories.  

Note: This course is a prerequisite for most Diesel courses and must be completed with “C” or to progress in the Diesel Technology program.

Course Objectives
  1. Work safely in the shop/laboratory without harm to oneself or other students.   
  2. Demonstrate appropriate tool usage in the shop/laboratory. 
  3. Perform medium/heavy duty truck preventive maintenance & Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections.
  4. Identify basic parts and components of medium/heavy duty equipment. 
  5. Explain the basic functions of medium/heavy duty equipment components.
  6. Identify standard & metric fasteners by grade, size and thread pitch.   
  7. Research manufacturer’s online sites to find service information. 
  8. Demonstrate the use of threading tools, extractors & thread repair tools.   
  9. Apply CVSA Vehicle out-of-service criteria
