ECED 1241 - School-Age Practicum 3.0 Credits
Students work with school age children ( 5- 8 years of age) on a weekly basis and become familiar with the daily routine of programs serving these ages. Basic skills include developmentally appropriate interactions, supporting teacher plans, and fostering development. Students spend 45 hours with school-age children plan a few experiences appropriate for this age group.
Note: Students are required to attend seminar at the beginning of the quarter Students enrolling in the ECED practica should follow the procedures on the Early Childhood Practicum website at www.mccneb.edu/ecp.

Course Objectives
- Demonstrate how to be a reliable early childhood caregiver and educator.
- Recognize the developmental stages of children from five to eight years of age.
- Recognize the necessary components of a developmentally appropriate school age learning environment.
- Identify appropriate guidance/interaction techniques to use with young children (5-8’s).
- Describe the various methods of observation and the guidelines associated with each method.
- Implement and analyze various observation techniques with children five to eight years of age.
- Apply early childhood supervisory skills in a manner that ensure the children’s health, safety and overall well-being.
- Demonstrate the ability to support and facilitate the caregiver/teacher’s curriculum plans and to assist in the early childhood practicum setting.
- Help develop and implement appropriate curriculum plans for children five to eight years of age.
- Demonstrate the ability to follow policies, regulations and routines of the early childhood setting and/or the supervising college program.
- Demonstrate the ability to practice professional ethics and integrity.
- Develop appropriate communication skills with peers, staff, parents, and children.
- Recognize the awareness of appreciation of individual likenesses and differences among children, families and colleagues.
- Recognize the importance and beginning the development of a professional portfolio.
