ARCH 1800 - Building MEP Systems Fundamentals

9.0 Credits

Students learn the fundamental behavior and components of a building’s MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and other associated) systems including how they are integrated within the structural and finish systems. This course examines the factors which influence design decisions related to equipment selection, operation, coordination, and the functional life cycle of building environmental systems. Students use computer software to model or draft basic building MEP systems.

Pre/Corequisite: (1) ARCH 1105 or instructor approval

Recommended: ARCH 1005

Course Objectives
1.    Relate building MEP systems and their impact on human comfort.

2.    Differentiate approaches to HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) systems, including ductwork and piping used to heat or cool a building and their delivery methods.

3.    Differentiate approaches to designing plumbing systems including drainage pipe, water pipe, and fire protection pipe systems in buildings.

4.    Compare design approaches for electrical systems including power supply and lighting.

5.    Differentiate the basics of low voltage, including telecommunications, fire alarm, and other specialty building systems.

6.    Evaluate the impact of sound and vibrations caused by the systems or functions of a building.

7.    Illustrate knowledge of drawings related to building MEP systems.

8.    Interpret and explain components of building MEP systems as they are integrated within buildings.

9.    Create drawings or models which represent basic mechanical and electrical systems within buildings.
