ELME 2230 - Programmable Logic Controllers


9.0 Credits

Students will become competent in operating programable logic controllers and troubleshooting machine problems. Monitoring, uploading, and downloading programs to processors will be a main learning focus. By the end of the course, students will have the basics necessary to diagnose machine failures using the processor program.

Prerequisites: (1) ELME 1212 with a grade of “C” or better

Course Objectives
  1. Identify and describe the functions and capabilities of a PLC.
  2. Describe and demonstrate how to address, use numbering systems, and bit instructions.
  3. Use Allen Bradley Software to develop a program.
  4. Develop ladder logic programs using timer function blocks, counter function blocks, and sequencer instructions.
  5. Develop ladder logic programs using comparison instructions, data file organization, control move and logic instructions.
  6. Develop ladder logic programs using Subroutine functions.
