PSPT 1000 - Basic Engine Principles I


4.5 Credits

Learners study the history, development, and engine operating principles as they relate to marine and recreational engine mechanics. This course familiarizes learners with basic repair of these engines.  This course includes troubleshooting and repair of small gas engines and power equipment.  The proper procedures for testing and repair of electrical components are covered.

Course Objectives
  1. Identify and examine the basics of internal combustion engines.
  2. Identify safety hazards and how to prevent them from occurring in Powersports shops.
  3. Identify and choose the appropriate tools to safely use for the task.
  4. Describe and explain the operation of 4-stroke and 2-sroke Powersports engines.
  5. Analyze the compression system for maintenance and light repair.
  6. Analyze the governor system for maintenance and light repair.
  7. Analyze the cooling and lubrication systems for maintenance and light repair.
  8. Analyze the multi-cylinder systems for maintenance and light repair
  9. Demonstrate the assembly and disassembly processes for Powersports engine
  10. Effectively use the Troubleshooting process for failure analysis.
