DESL 1295 - CDL Laws and Regulations 4.5 Credits
Students comprehend laws and regulations used to operate Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV). When students successfully complete this course, students have completed one-half of the requirements to take the Skills Test for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Prerequisites: (3) Commercial Learner’s Permit, DOT Physical, DOT Drug screen must be taken within thirty days prior to the first day of class.
Non-native English speakers must demonstrate English proficiency. Students taking the ESL Accuplacer test must obtain a score of 70 or above in Reading and 86 or above in Listening - must be completed prior to taking this course.

Course Objectives
- Identify driver qualifications such as medical, fatigue, drug and alcohol, hours of service, and experience.
- Differentiate among federal laws regarding the operation of Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV) on public streets and highways.
- Identify procedures for pre and post trip inspections and procedures for reporting malfunctions.
- Explain the function of all key components of a CMV.
- Explain basic procedures for safe operation of a CMV.
- Describe the Hazardous Materials Compliance Rule.
- Recognize potentially hazardous road conditions, emergency traffic conditions, and defensive driving techniques.
- State how visual search methods, effects of speed, and the techniques for controlling space ensures the driver’s safety and the safety of others.
