VACA 2310 - The Business of Media 4.5 Credits
Students gain foundational knowledge of copyright, Fair Use, broadcast regulations, contracts, and entrepreneurship in the media entertainment industry. Students explore the basic legal considerations of starting their own production company including pricing, invoicing, insurance, and taxes.

Course Objectives
- Understand and explain the basics of copyright regarding creation, reproduction, derivatives, licensing, Fair Use, and performance.
- Understand and explain government oversight and regulation of the media entertainment industry (including the significance of the Fourth Amendment) and the history of corporate media ownership.
- Evaluate professional industry unions, guilds and other applicable relationships (agents, managers, etc.) and choose which of these relationships to foster in their own career.
- Write budgets for media productions including above-the-line and below-the-line expenses and bid projects based on those calculations.
- Craft basic contracts for small, independent media productions.
- Understand the basic legal necessities of a small business including forming an LLC, contractor verses employee status, tax considerations, and subcontracting.
