VACA 2080 - Surround Sound Mixing 4.5 Credits
Students are introduced to the processes of recording, mixing, and formatting surround sound for video and music. Students become familiar with various surround formats and speaker set ups and complete a variety of video/music projects focusing on recording, mixing, and finalizing sound in the 5.1 surround field. All projects will be mixed in the 5.1 mix room, on the Pro Tools HD native system.
Prerequisites: (1) VACA 1020 must be completed prior to this course.

Course Objectives 1. Modify a default Protools stereo output configuration into 5.1 surround for surround mixing.
2. Identify various surround formats and input/output path orders for each.
3. Produce a 5.1 microphone recording array and capture sound in surround sound.
4. Develop accurate sound events lists, and place mono sound effects in the surround field.
5. Utilize mixing skills like filtering, panning, and parallel processing to create a sonic environment for video.
6. Demonstrate the ability to import and export multichannel audio in and out of Protools.
7. Produce a research paper exploring modern technology used in the surround field, not covered in class.
