HIMS 1350 - EHR Lab Experience


4.5 Credits

Students gain knowledge of the importance of accurate and timely health record documentation, as well as fundamental health record documentation requirements and principles in a variety of healthcare settings. Topics include information governance, electronic health records and health IT, clinical documentation improvement, along with federal and state guidelines. Students work in an online simulated system to explore a variety of EHR components.

Course Objectives
  1. Discuss the framework and history of the healthcare delivery system.
  2. Explain the principal and ancillary functions of the healthcare record.
  3. Summarize the importance of statistical reporting and public health.
  4. Describe the analysis and assessment of clinical document improvement.
  5. Explain information governance as it relates to meaningful use and quality measures.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of the governmental and accreditation guidelines and requirements in the management of health records.
  7. Identify healthcare documentation principles and guidelines for a variety of healthcare settings.
  8. Discuss the many facets of clinical documentation in a variety of healthcare delivery systems.
  9. Evaluate security measures to protect health information as changes in technology occur.
  10. Demonstrate skills to access an EHR system to perform administrative and clerical processes.
  11. Develop critical thinking and decision making skills to address the various issues of documentation in the healthcare field.
