INFO 2100 - Organizations, Applications, & Technology

Students are introduced to organizations and the role that information and information systems (IS) play in supporting an organization’s operations, decision-making processes, quality management, and strategic activities. Course topics include management of the IS function, strategic and regulator issues of telecommunications, and ethical and legal issues.

Course Objectives
  1. Describe the role of information systems, their exciting potential, and the associated challenges in today’s competitive and global business environment.
  2. Describe the diversity of information systems and networks in the enterprise.
  3. Give examples of information systems, organizations, and management models; explain their impact on the decision-making process.
  4. Articulate how Internet technology, electronic commerce, and electronic web-based systems have transformed organizations, business models, supply chains, and quality of information.
  5. Summarize ethical and social issues related to information systems.
  6. Describe the technical foundations of information systems, including infrastructure, databases, telecommunications, and security and control.
  7. Describe the basic functions of networks, including the Internet.
  8. Discuss the business value of systems and technology.
  9. Describe how organizations can use a variety of systems for managing knowledge, enhancing decision-making, and collaborating.
  10. Explain the overall process of systems development, including phases and techniques for systems analysis, design, implementation, and project management.
  11. Discuss the global dimensions of information systems and organizations.
