SPAN 1060 - Spanish for Healthcare I 4.5 Credits
Those in the medical profession are finding that they need to help and serve more Spanish-speaking clients than they have in the past. To serve these clients better it is important that these medical professionals have a grasp of the Spanish language and culture. The course provides the necessary skills to communicate in Spanish at a beginning level. NOTE: It is strongly recommended that students who have no prior experience in Spanish take SPAN 1110 or place out of SPAN 1110 using the Spanish placement test prior to enrolling in SPAN 1060.
Recommended: SPAN 1110 or equivalent for those with no prior Spanish experience

Course Objectives
- Recognize and respond to questions and comments in Spanish in a medical environment
- Conjugate known regular and irregular verbs correctly in the present tense.
- Apply rules of gender and number for articles and nouns.
- Recognize adjectives in singular and plural forms.
- Use correct expressions about hospital, doctor’s office, pharmacy, and family health care issues.
- Students will compare Hispanic culture to their own and discuss specific medical practices and situations in Spanish speaking countries as well as conduct a variety of types of medical role play situations in Spanish.
