PSYC 1000 - Psychology for Everyday Living

This course provides a survey of the major themes in psychology and explores applications for daily living. Topics include adult development, personal problem-solving and motivation, anger management, parenting, stress management, and intimacy issues. NOTE: PSYC 1000 is highly recommended for vocational technical careers.

Course Objectives
  1. Apply the scientific method to the student’s profession.
  2. Distinguish between the major theoretical perspectives in psychology.
  3. Identify sources of stress and apply coping and adjustment strategies.
  4. Explain examples of conflict resolution strategies.
  5. Describe mental disorders and therapies.
  6. Apply problem solving techniques to career selection.
  7. Compare theories of motivation.
  8. Analyze three stage theories of human development.
  9. Define modern theories of interpersonal attraction, and provide examples of the impact of intimacy, self-disclosure, and communication on attraction.
  10. Evaluate the research on gender roles, sexism, and human sexuality.
