ECED 1230 - School-Age Child Development and Programming 4.5 Credits
This course focuses on typical and atypical development of the child ages 5 through 12 years. This course will examine program design in out of school care that addresses the domains of physical growth and motor skills, cognition and language, and social/emotional development.
Note: This course involves a field experience contact hours within the Early Childhood education setting.

Course Objectives
- Demonstrate knowledge of physical and motor growth and development, cognitive and language development, and social/emotional development in children ages 5 through 12.
- Identify how to arrange and equip a physical setting to create an active learning environment for children ages 5 through 12.
- Identify ways to establish supportive adult-child and adult-adult interactions.
- Recognize children in the context of their families, culture, schools, and community.
- Identify health and safety practices vital in caring for children ages 5 through 12.
- Examine developmentally appropriate activities for children ages 5 through 12 based upon state and national guidelines and standards.
- Develop an awareness and appreciation of the individual likenesses and differences among children, families and colleagues.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding the multiple influences on development and learning.
- Knowing about and understanding diverse family and community characteristics.
- Supporting and engaging families through respectful reciprocal relationships.
- Knowing how to involve families and communities in children’s learning and development.
- Knowing and using observation, documentation, and other appropriate assessment tools and measurement.
- Knowing about assessment partnerships with families and professional colleagues.
