ECED 1230 - School-Age Child Development and Programming


4.5 Credits

This course focuses on typical and atypical development of the child ages 5 through 12 years.  This course will examine program design in out of school care that addresses the domains of physical growth and motor skills, cognition and language, and social/emotional development.   

Note: This course involves a field experience contact hours within the Early Childhood education setting.

Course Objectives
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of physical and motor growth and development, cognitive and language development, and social/emotional development in children ages 5 through 12. 
  2. Identify how to arrange and equip a physical setting to create an active learning environment for children  ages 5 through 12.
  3. Identify ways to establish supportive adult-child and adult-adult interactions.
  4. Recognize children in the context of their families, culture, schools, and community.
  5. Identify health and safety practices vital in caring for children ages 5 through 12.
  6. Examine developmentally appropriate activities for children ages 5 through 12 based upon state and national guidelines and standards.
  7. Develop an awareness and appreciation of the individual likenesses and differences among children, families and colleagues.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding the multiple influences on development and learning.
  9. Knowing about and understanding diverse family and community characteristics.
  10. Supporting and engaging families through respectful reciprocal relationships.
  11. Knowing how to involve families and communities in children’s learning and development.
  12. Knowing and using observation, documentation, and other appropriate assessment tools and measurement.
  13. Knowing about assessment partnerships with families and professional colleagues.
