ECED 1150 - Introduction to Early Childhood Education 4.5 Credits
This course is an overview of early childhood education, history, and trends. It examines the philosophies of various programs, diversity, inclusion, licensing standards, current legislation,professionalism, and advocacy.
Note: This course requires field experience contact hours within early childhood education settings.

Course Objectives
- Examine the historical and philosophical origins of early childhood education and it’s relevance to current practices.
- Develop an awareness of the different types of early childhood schools and programs today.
- Compare and contrast different theoretical approaches to learning in early childhood education.
- Identify and use observational skills needed to serve as an educator of young children.
- Develop an awareness of developmentally appropriate instruction and assessment in early childhood educational programs.
- Examine current regulations and guidelines and how they contribute to quality early childhood educational programs.
- Explore his/her personal philosophy of early childhood education.
- Examine the opportunities for a career in early childhood education, child development or related fields.
- Develop an awareness and appreciation of the individual likenesses and differences among children.
- Examine values and ethics of the early childhood professional.
- Recognize the importance of and begin development of a professional portfolio
