INFO 1111 - Linux Operating Systems I


4.5 Credits

Students explore the Linux operating system. Students learn the fundamental concepts of Linux required to use the system effectively. Topics include the BASH shell, getting help, editors, variables, redirection and piping, directories and files, links, the FHS, locating and searching files, and other basic topics. This course along with INFO 1121 and INFO 1131 align with objectives from the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHSCA) certification.

Course Objectives
  1. Navigate Linux terminals and the GUI desktop in a virtual environment.
  2. Distinguish the correct syntax for BASH shell commands.
  3. Use the manual pages and other help utilities to effectively troubleshoot command execution errors.
  4. Use text editors to create, edit, and save files.
  5. Create aliases and environment variables, export, and add to Shell configuration files.
  6. Use the appropriate Linux utilities to manage data streams, standard output, standard input, and standard error.
  7. Navigate the Linux directory structure using both absolute and relative paths and demonstrate knowledge of the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard.
  8. Create, copy, move, rename, and delete files and perform other file management functions.
  9. Create users and groups and configure their ownership of files and directories and set correct permissions.
  10. Build basic BASH shell scripts and know the various ways to run them. Use the shebang, comments, read and exit commands, Decision constructs and Loop constructs in scripts.
  11. Use OpenSSH to connect remotely to a server and copy files between systems.
