INFO 1008 - Business Office Communications


4.5 Credits

Students explore the use of technology and methods used for effective written and verbal communication in today’s business environment. Students learn to compose and edit various types of business communications that include the proper usage of basic English grammar and punctuation rules to structure and organize their writing. Students also acquire technology skills using the Microsoft Office Outlook software to compose and send electronic mail and to maintain electronic calendars, task lists, and contact lists. Students learn the objectives for the Microsoft ® Office Specialist certification exam for Outlook.

Course Objectives
  1. Identifies adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, singular and possessive form of nouns and personal pronouns, active and passive verbs, prepositions, subject and verb agreement, verb tenses, and misspelled words in written sentences and paragraphs.
  2. Writes sentences and paragraphs including proper use of adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, singular and possessive form of nouns and personal pronouns, active and passive verbs, prepositions, subject and verb agreement, verb tenses, and correct spelling.
  3. Writes sentences and paragraphs properly using commas, semicolons, colons, dashes, exclamation points, periods, quotation marks, and other punctuation marks.
  4. Identify improper use of using commas, semicolons, colons, dashes, exclamation points, periods, quotation marks, and other punctuation in written sentences and paragraphs.
  5. Composes various types of written and verbal business communications.
  6. Sends electronic mail deemed as appropriate for the situation using the Microsoft Office Outlook software.
  7. Manages electronic mail messages, Calendar items, Task Lists, and Contacts using Microsoft Office Outlook folders, rules, and security features and options.
  8. Demonstrates scheduling and time management skills using the Calendar, Contacts, and Task List features provided in the Microsoft Office Outlook software.
  9. Summarizes trends in communication including cloud based and social media applications.
