PHOT 1101 - Basic Digital Photography 6.0 Credits
Students are introduced to digital photographic image-making, image editing and printing. Emphasis is on camera operation, photographic composition, and technical and conceptual understanding of the photographic medium. All work is evaluated regularly in critiques. Students must have access to a digital camera with manual aperture and shutter controls for this class and a portable, external hard drive. Type of camera used is up to the instructor’s discretion.

Course Objectives
- Identify the major types of photographic styles as they relate to contemporary image-makers.
- Identify and replicate various types of photographic composition.
- Identify the various components and functions of digital single lens reflex (DSLR) or mirrorless cameras and lenses.
- Control image exposure through shutter-speed and depth-of-field calculations.
- Apply appropriate criteria for composition and lighting quality in order to produce a visually communicative image.
- Apply basic image edits in preparation of printing and peer critique using image editing software.
- Critique images for the purpose of appraising subject content, framing background selection, light and dark values, perspective, point of view, and technical quality. Emphasis is placed on achievement of photographic vision.
